Analysis of The Onion Satire

In the article written by The Onion, the author mocks Trump's ability to show compassion for ridiculous topics such as WWE, but not important aspects that are relevant in today's society.

On November 11, 2018, Trump stated he could not attend the ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I in Paris because of the rain. Trump voiced he could not attend the event because there was no safe way to travel to the event due to the low visibility. Although, many people criticized his absence and inability to find a way to the event when there were a variety of options.

The article uses a sarcastic tone to show Trump's incompassionate actions and choices that now represent the President of the United States. The author uses WWE to show how ridiculous Trump's statements have been recently and how his compassion for Americans is out of place. The article also uses Verbal irony by stating that his tribute to the fallen heroes was touching, but really means that it was nonexistent.

"They endured chokeslams, flying elbows, and piledrivers, and many of them courageously laid the smackdown to protect the freedoms of this great nation"

The line above is showing the absurd comparison between World War I and WWE, similar to how Trump places importance on things that are not relevant or appropriate.

Thus, the Onion shows that Trump would feel it is more important to show compassion towards WWE wrestlers than those who died in World War I. Not only does this give a comedic approach to the topic, but also shows the problem in America's presidency and government.

  1. I like how you discussed different devices the satire used like verbal irony and sarcasm. Your analysis of the satire and the quote you pulled was well done and i think it fully captured the idea of the satire. I also liked how at the end you gave a deeper analysis and said that the satire showed how it gave the topic a comedic approach but also showed the problem in America's presidency and government.

  2. I like your analysis of the article and the many devices that were implemented. It was very clear how satire was used to relate WWE and WW1 in effect to mock Trump. Your quote works to emphasize that point.
